Restore your sofa: reviving upholstery after a long NZ winter

After months of cosy nights and rainy days, your sofa has likely carried the brunt of New Zealand’s winter living. Crumbs, pet hair, coffee stains and a general ‘lived-in’ feel lingers long after the heaters turn off. As the days feel lighter and the air fresher, spring is always the perfect time to refresh your home, and your upholstery is a great place to start.

Paying attention to your couch now pays dividends, being proactive in caring for your upholstery lengthens its lifespan but also has the power to transform your home; after all, it’s a big piece of furniture that often dominates a room whether it’s in an open plan kitchen or lounge. At Christchurch Carpet Cleaning, we’re always happy to help rejuvenate tired, overused furniture, restoring its softness, vibrancy and freshness to your home.

Restore cushion shape and comfort

Winter lounging often leads to sagging cushions and misshapen padding. To fix this, add more stuffing or replace foam inserts to restore firmness to create a more supportive seating experience. Evenly distribute the filling, then gently plump to reshape each cushion.

To keep your sofas looking and feeling its best, weekly cushion care is recommended. Start by vacuuming the sofa and cushions. Use a soft brush attachment to gently lift fibres and help the cushions regain their shape. Next, plump any removable cushions by gently rotating and patting them to redistribute the filling. For fixed cushions, starting from the centre of the cushion smooth outwards in opposite directions – left and right, up then down and then diagonally.

Breathe new life into your upholstery

Your sofa transformation starts with a deep, methodical clean, paying attention to every crevice, seam and corner of the sofa and cushions. DIY cleaning may seem tempting, but there are several reasons why it’s best to leave it to the experts:

·        The wrong type of upholstery cleaning solution can discolour or shrink fabric.

·        Over-wetting upholstery leads to mould, mildew and lingering odours.

·        Over-wetting risks water damage.

·        Over enthusiastic scrubbing can permanently damage fibres and fabric integrity.

·        Incomplete rinsing leaves behind a dirt attracting sticky residue.

·        Incorrect stain treatments can set marks instead of removing them.

·        DIY upholstery cleaning may void manufacturer’s warranty.

A household vacuum is fine for light maintenance cleaning, but to really give a thorough deep clean, an annual professional upholstery clean is recommended. As professional carpet and couch cleaning experts, Christchurch Carpet Cleaning use high-powered hot water extraction methods to reach far deeper and efficiently than any DIY method offers. During an appointment, fabrics are always assessed as each textile (for example, a cotton blend, linen, velvet, suede or leather) requires specific care. We only use fabric-safe steam cleaning for upholstery to remove stains safely which protects the texture and colour.

By taking the time to care for your sofa, you not only restore its comfort and appearance but extend its life for many more seasons to come.
