3 Carpet care hacks you wish you’d read earlier

As one of the leading professional carpet cleaning companies in Canterbury, Christchurch Carpet Cleaning is well-versed in carpet care. Learn these carpet cleaning tips to keep your carpets clean and germ-free between professional cleanings.

1.  How to clean deep pile carpet and shaggy rugs

Shag carpets, or deep pile carpets as they are also known, are back in fashion with vengeance. These types of carpets require a deeper regular carpet cleaner than shorter fibred carpets which easily show dirt and debris. They are also prone to shed carpet fibres.

The key to stopping these shedding episodes is to vacuum with the hose, rather than using the standard attachment. This helps to get to the roots of the carpet without damaging the weave. To maintain a thick carpet's cleanliness and condition, it is recommended to have it professionally cleaned every 6 to 12 months.

Having your carpet professionally cleaned on a regular basis helps to ensure that it stays clean and in good shape. The recommended frequency for professional cleaning is every 6 to 12 months. This regular maintenance is important for keeping your thick carpet in optimal condition.

Invest in a lint roller to quickly remove stubborn dirt and debris that your vacuum can't pick up. Best for small problematic areas rather than the whole carpet, unless you have time to kill.

2.  How to remove pet hair from carpets and upholstery

Professional carpet or upholstery cleaning is necessary to remove pet odors and hair. Even vacuum cleaners made for pet hair often struggle to effectively clean. If you have a sofa or carpet with short pet hair, a squeegee can remove it effectively. A clean and rinsed squeegee effortlessly pulls the hair from the carpet, use it as you would when cleaning the windows.

Silicon squeegee is flexible for sofas and upholstery, while rubber squeegee is ideal for carpets.

3.  How to remove furniture impressions from a carpet

Rearranging furniture can freshen up a room, but it might reveal ugly marks left by heavy items.

To remove a dent from a natural fibre carpet, use a hot iron held 4 to 6 inches above the dent. Release steam onto the dent until it becomes wet and heated. If the dent remains, place a cloth or towel on top it and apply the iron directly. Use a coin (or similar) in a back and forward motion to replump the carpet.

Synthetic carpet: The good news is a simple ice cube can help restore the carpet pile of a synthetic carpet. Leave an ice cube to melt in the dent.

Dab the carpet until it is almost dry. Then, take a coin and rub it back and forth. This will help the carpet fibres absorb the water and return to their original shape.

Regularly cleaning and maintaining your carpets and upholstery can help them stay fresh and beautiful for a longer time. However, professional cleaning is still the best way to restore them to their original glory.
